In our Trailer we intend to use a scene that involves to decision to take a life threatening drug (not the actual taking of the drug) The scene we are hoping to create is of a man deciding weather or not life is still worth living.
So because of this content we researched the BBFC "British Broad of Film Classification" to find a suitable certification that can give us an idea on what target audience we are looking for.
Whilst researching we found some cool and interesting facts about classification and the things they have to look for to make the right decision for a age restriction
One age certification we were hoping we could fall into is 12 as it would provide us with a wide target audience for the film and we may just be able to make the certification but because of the content we decided that a 12 certification was just a bit too young for the content of the film.
We then looked at the next age certificate "15"
This certificate allows us to demonstrate the use of drugs and show explicit scenes such as violence and sex as long as it isn't to much or to strong. we found that this is the ideal certification we want for our film as it allows us to have a large target audience and is sutibly aged and allows us to have a big more freedom with the drug scene and shouldent cause to much of a problem.
So a 15 Certification is what we are going for as it is the most appropriate age for this type of film.
Why is certification so important ???
Film Certification is reqiured by law for every film made around the world. but a certification can have a huge impact on a films audience figures as some films are targeted at certain age groups but may not be classified for it and resulting in a smaller audience and a low profit margin for the film.
A recent example of this is "Batman The Dark Knight" which was released in 2009 and was targeted for a 12 + certification but was granted a 15 by the BBFC in the UK this caused upraw with the producers of the film Warner Brothers as they would lose out millions because of this. eventually the matter was resolved and Batman Dark Knight was a huge success in the UK box office.
But that is a good example of why the certification and the films content is so important to the production company and so thats why we did research into seeing what sort of certicication our film would be getting for the UK Box Office.
