This shows here that a film poster provides allot of information on the film and even present ideas that sometimes you wouldn't really think about e.g the light and dark sides of the poster representing good and evil. Also the poster is a main form of advertising and also a good souvenir of a film and is also classed as merchandise.
Film posters then have a huge purpose for advertising way before the film has even come out and are generally used for a "teaser" area of marketing to get people interested into the film and begin researching.
